A method is described for the determination of current, power, electrical conductivity and the electric and magnetic field strengths in electrodeless inductive low-pressure gas discharges. A transformer model for discharge and induction coil is derived from Maxwell's equations. The method is applied to a low-pressure argon-mercury discharge excited between 3 and 8 MHz. © 1990 IOP Publishing Ltd.
