A Wyodak subbituminous coal, a Texas lignite, and their O-methylated and O-acetylated derivatives were swollen in both polar and nonpolar solvents (16 total). The lignite swollen with nonpolar solvents does not follow regular solution theory while the subbituminous coal does in spite of similar oxygen contents. The cross-link density of the subbituminous coal was calculated and is slightly greater than that of Illinois No. 6 coal, consistent with the coalification process being a net depolymerization. © 1990, American Chemical Society.
