Several experiments are presented indicating that LHCII, the major light-harvesting pigment-protein complex of Photosystem II isolated from rye leaves, exhibits properties of an enzyme catalyzing the epoxidation of zeaxanthin to violaxanthin. On the basis of this as well as other recent findings, a new model of a spatial organization of the xanthophyll cycle within a thylakoic membrane is proposed.
