The ternary multication chalcogenide (Cu0.5In2.5□) Se4 has the tetragonal thiogallate structure Above a certain temperature the cations in the tetrahedral interstices of the cubic close packed selenium sublattice disorder. On cooling slowly a complicated domain structure consisting of 12 variants is formed. This domain structure is analysed using group theoretical concepts. Contrast experiments in the electron microscope give direct evidence for the occurrence of the different types of interfaces. On fast cooling a transition state is formed; its characteristic cluster is a tetrahedron containing three cations and one vacancy. High resolution images directly reveal the pattern of vacancy tunnels in the thiogallate structure. Copyright © 1979 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA
