CONSTITUTIVE ISOFLAVONES AS MODULATORS OF INDOLE-3-ACETIC-ACID OXIDASE ACTIVITY OF ACIDIC CELL-WALL ISOPEROXIDASES FROM LUPIN HYPOCOTYLS

摘要
The effect of isoflavones on the indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) oxidase activity of acidic cell wall isoperoxidases from lupin hypocotyls was tested using as isoflavone source a mixture of isoflavones obtained from the whole hypocotyl, isoflavones isolated from five different growth zones, and individual isoflavones purified by thin-layer chromatography. The results showed that 2'-hydroxygenistein was the most potent inhibitor of the enzymatic activity, genistein and wighteone having similar, but lower, inhibitory effects. Since 2'-hydroxygenistein is accumulated in the cell walls of young tissues, it can be expected that the strong inhibitory effect shown by isoflavones isolated from the most apical zones is due mainly to 2'-hydroxygenistein. These results are discussed on the basis of the compartimentalization of auxin catabolism in both young epidermal cells and differentiating vascular tissues of lupin seedlings.
