A study is made of the possible use of a stainless steel 304 ultrahigh vacuum system for studying the kinetics of the interaction of gases with metal single crystal surfaces. Rates of hydrogen desorption from the walls were measured after vacuum degassing at high temperatures, and the causes of high desorption rates discussed.
