REACTION OF W2CL93- WITH ALCOHOLS

When [(n-C4H9)4N]3W2Cl9 is heated with alcohols, yellow-green, diamagnetic W2Cl4(OR)2(ROH)4 (R = CH3, C2H5, and n-C3H7) is obtained. The stoichiometry was confirmed from hydrogen evolution experiments using both LiAlH4 and LiAlD4. With the latter, mass spectroscopic analysis of the evolved gas indicated that half of the liberated hydrogen originated in the compound, proving that these reactions do not include reduction of the metal by LiAlH4. All compounds were successfully related through alcohol-exchange reactions. The pmr and infrared spectra of the compounds are presented, but no definite conclusion concerning the nature of the bridging groups is obtained. The reactions of pyridine and DMSO with the ethoxoethanol compound have been shown to proceed with replacement of the bound alcohol only. © 1969, American Chemical Society. All rights reserved.
