FORMATION OF SOOT DURING THE DECOMPOSITION OF GASEOUS CARBIDES IN GRAPHITE-FURNACE ATOMIC-ABSORPTION SPECTROMETRY

摘要
Formation of a cloud of soot in the course of carbothermal reduction of Al2O3 in graphite tubes has been revealed. This phenomenon is a logical consequence of decomposition of an over-equilibrium excess of the gaseous carbides participating in the reduction of the oxides by carbon. The results of studying the dependence of the phenomenon on the experimental conditions (temperature, sample mass, spectral region and furnace zone) by absorption and emission spectroscopy are interpreted in terms of widely recognized concepts. The phenomenon revealed argues for the recently proposed mechanism of spike formation and the gaseous carbide theory.
