EXTINCTION COEFFICIENT OF AZULENE ANION RADICAL AND YIELD OF SCAVENGEABLE ELECTRON IN GAMMA-IRRADIATED ORGANIC GLASS

γ Irradiation of azulene in 2-methyltetrahydrofuran at 77°K produces azulene anion radicals which exhibit an absorption band at 440 mμ. The increase of the anion band is in proportion to the decrease of azulene band at 687 mμ. Knowing the extinction coefficient of the 687-mμ band at 77°K as 168.31. mol-1 cm-1, the extinction coefficient of the anion band was determined to be 6.78 × 103 l. mol-1 cm-1. The G value of total scavengeable electron for the matrix was determined as 2.53 on the basis that all scavengeable electrons react with azulene to form its anion.
