GENETICS OF ALLOZYMES IN POPULUS DELTOIDES MARSH, POPULUS-NIGRA L, AND POPULUS-MAXIMOWICZII HENRY

Progenies of 12 controlled crosses of Populus deltoides Marsh, with P. deltoides, P. nigra L., and P. maximowiczii Henry were analyzed by means of starch gel electro-phoresis to examine the inheritance of isozymes of 34 to 36 loci that code for 12 enzymes in the roots of P. deltoides, P. nigra and P. maximowiczii. Chi-square good-ness-of-fit tests verified single-gene Mendelian control of the segregating allozyme variants at each of six loci: Aco-1, Mdh-4, Mdh-6, Per-1, Per-2, and 6-Pgd-4. Evidence was also obtained for single-gene control of isozymes of each of the remaining 28 loci in P. deltoides, 30 loci in P. nigra, and 28 loci in P. maximowiczii. The isozyme variants of the corresponding loci in the three Populus species were allelic and exhibited an inheritance pattern in the interspecific crosses that is typical of intra-specific crosses. The results of joint two-locus segregation tests indicated no linkage between Aco-1 and Mdh-4, Aco-1 and 6-Pgd-4, Mdh-4 and 6-Pgd-4, and Mdh-6 and 6-Pgd-4 in P. niogra. © 1990 The American Genetic Association.
