ISOLATION AND CHARACTERIZATION OF URACIL-DEGRADING CLOSTRIDIA FROM SOIL

Five strains of uracil‐degrading clostridia were isolated from soil using an enrichment medium containing uracil as the principal energy source. All the isolates resembled Clostridium glycolicum, although they lacked the characteristic ability to ferment ethylene glycol. Both representative isolates and a reference strain of Cl. glycolicum degraded uracil and produced β‐alanine when grown in a semi‐defined medium. Thus, the uracil‐degrading activity was similar to that described previously for Cl. uracilicum. Copyright © 1979, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserved
