ON INTERPRETATION OF TRENDS IN ELEMENT RATIOS IN DIFFERENTIATED IGNEOUS ROCKS WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO STRONTIUM AND CALCIUM

A detailed consideration of the partition of Sr and Ca between coexisting solid and liquid phases shows that the increase in the Sr Ca ratio with differentiation cannot be interpreted in terms of plagioclase, the major Sr-bearing phase alone. In contradistinction to the normally expressed view, Sr enters plagioclase more readily than Ca and the observed rise in Sr Ca in successive plagioclases reflects the changing liquid composition which, in turn, is controlled by the crystallization of pyroxenes in addition to plagioclases. The conclusions are of general applicability to trace element studies. © 1968.
