CAN PHASE-SPACE THEORY REPRODUCE EXPERIMENTAL NEUTRAL PRODUCT BRANCHING RATIOS FOR DISSOCIATIVE RECOMBINATION REACTIONS

A formulation of the statistical phase space theory has been used to obtain neutral product branching ratios for tetratomic ion-electron dissociative recombination reactions. The results have been compared with recent experimental results for the H3O+ + e, NNOH+ + e, HOCO+ + e, and H3S+ + e reactions. Two conclusions have been reached. First, some dissociative recombination reactions can be described by a phase space theory that contains neutral product distributions with limited rotational excitation. Second, phase space theory does not, however, currently possess general predictive power, free from parameterization, for tetratomic ion-electron dissociative recombination reactions.
