摘要
The wetting ability and reactivity of oxide compounds on cemented carbide inserts at elevated temperatures are studied. Calcium aluminates show moderate wetting ability and good adhesion but no reactions are observed by scanning electron microscopy and energy-dispersive microanalysis inspection. Silicates show very good wetting ability at high temperatures on TiC-containing inserts and reactions are observed in the tool. With WC-based inserts the reactivity of silicates is negligible and the wetting ability poor. It seems that calcium aluminates are bound to the oxidized surface layer of the tool only, whereas silicate compounds dissolve the carbides to produce interface layers as thick as 100 μm. It is argued that a chemically passive layer on the tool during machining is better from the point of view of tool life than a reactive inclusion layer. © 1990.
