Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and liquid solvent extraction procedures are compared for the determination of the cyclic trimer content of poly (ethylene terephthalate) film. SFE with carbon dioxide at 400 atm and temperatures up to 215°C is much more rapid, gives better repeatability, and yields extracts that are not contaminated with extracting solvent. The kinetics of SFE fit a model that presumes extraction is diffusion-limited. The variation of diffusion coefficients with temperature for cyclic trimer in PET shows Arrhenuis-type behavior. © Oxford University Press 1993.
