In vivo and in vitro antiviral activity of Trifluorothymidinc (FsTDR), Iododeoxyuridine (IDU), Methylaminodeoxyuridine (MADU), Cytosine Arabinoside (CA), and Phagicin were compared using the standard model of herpetic keratitis in rabbits, and an agar diffusion plaque inhibition system. All of these drugs were active in vivo. F3TDR, IDU, and CA showed good antiviral activity in vitro. MADU demonstrated cellular toxicity in vitro. Phagicin showed no in vitro activity in the agar system, but was active when methylcellulose overlay was used in another study. The solid-media system represents a satisfactory in vitro correlate for the rabbit herpetic keratitis model. © 1968 S. Karger AG, Basel.
