HYDROGEN ON PT(111) STUDIED BY DYNAMIC MEASUREMENTS OF THE WORK FUNCTION

The adsorption and desorption of H2 on Pt(111) have been studied by dynamic measurements of the work function (Δφ) and thermal desorption spectroscopy (TDS). Two adsorbed states, (β1 and β2) are detected by TDS. It is shown that TDS correctly gives the sequence of population of the states during adsorption (β2 fills first). The results indicate that both the resolution into two states by TDS and the power law dependence of Δφ upon coverage are best rationalized in terms of a single adsorbed state whose properties are continuously modified by strong lateral interactions. © 1979.
