摘要
A portable electronic device has been developed that successfully detects rapid eye movement (REM) in sleeping subjects. The development was aimed at exploiting the high correlation between a subject's ability to recall dreams and his abrupt awakening a short time after the onset of REM sleep. The device is of clinical interest as a means of increasing the amount of raw dream material available for patients in psychoanalysis. Eye movements are sensed with surface electrodes and wire leads which monitor electroocular potentials. Machine detection and discrimination of REM signals are accomplished against a background of other electrophysiologic sources and artifacts due to subject movement, as well as external electrical activity. The device has worked with three subjects. Careful evaluation will be required in order to specify quantitatively the fraction of REM being detected as well as the clinical usefulness of the device. Some of the difficulties of an evaluation are noted. © 1979 SDAIEEE
