ALUMINUM SUBSTITUTION IN THE GLASS SYSTEM 0.33 [(1-X)P2S5-XAL2S3]-0.67 LI2S

Glasses belonging to the 0.33 [(1 - x)P2S5-xAl2S3]-0.67 Li2S system were synthesized for 0 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 0.5 using classical quenching techniques. Conductivity increased by a factor of three with the first addition of Al2S3(x = 0.1) after which only small changes occurred with further additions. T(g) was increased from 220-degrees-C to 276-degrees-C in a nearly linear function with composition. P-31 solid state MAS-NMR experiments carried out on glassy and crystallized samples reveal that aluminum substitution results in changes in the phosphorus speciation. These glasses are interesting not only for their high conductivity at room temperature, but also as possible electrolytes for high temperature applications.
