FAT LOADING TESTS IN HEMORRHAGIC HYPERLIPEMIA IN RABBITS

Abstract. Repeated daily bleedings (15 ml/day/kg body wt) caused hyperlipidaemia in rabbits, the rise of tri‐glycerides being 15–fold in 4 days. When the red cells which had been withdrawn were reinjected daily no increase of triglycerides ensued, whereas the reinjections of serum did not prevent the development of hyperlipidaemia. These results indicate that the primary cause of haemorrhagic hyperlipidaemia is the loss of red cells while the loss of serum proteins has no significance in this respect. Both in normal and in hyperlipidaemic rabbits, the elimination of intravenously administered fat emulsion was found to conform to a single exponential function throughout the concentration range studied (9–11 mmol/ 1 above starting level). The fractional removal rate (k value) was significantly lower in hyperlipidaemic than in normal animals. Reinjection of serum without blood cells did not correct the k value, whereas reinjection of blood cells returned the fractional removal rate to normal In most experiments a negative correlation was found between the triglyceride concentration and the log k. In the most severe anaemia such a correlation was not present, possibly suggesting a defect in the elimination mechanisms. Copyright © 1978, Wiley Blackwell. All rights reserved
