THE SYNTHESIS AND SPECTRAL PROPERTIES OF SOME NEW CATIONIC MONO(BUT-2-YNE) BIS(PHOSPHINE) COMPLEXES [W(CO)L2(S2CNC4H8)(ETA-2-MEC2ME)][BPH4], [W(CO)L2(S2CNME2)(ETA-2-MEC2ME) [BPH4], [W(CO)L2(S2CNET2)(ETA-2-MEC2ME)[BPH4], [W(CO)L2(S2CN(CH2PH)2(ETA-2-MEC2ME)[BPH4], [W(CO)L2(S2COET)(ETA-2-MEC2ME)][BPH4]

Reactions of the complex [W(CO)(NCMe)(S2CX)(eta-2-MeC2Me)2][BPh4] with two equivalents of L (for X = NC4H8; L = PMe3, PMe2Ph, PMePh2, PPh3, PEtPh2, PEt2Ph, PEt3, P(n)Pr3, P(n)Bu3, PCyPh2, PCy2Ph, P(CH2CH=CH2)Ph2 or [Fe(eta-5-C5H4PPh2)(eta-5-C5H5)] and for X = NMe2, NEt2, N(CH2Ph)2 and OEt; L = P(n)Bu3) at room temperature in CH2Cl2 afford good yields of the new bis(phosphine) products [W(CO)L2(S2CX)(eta-2-MeC2Me)][BPh4] (1-17). P-31 NMR spectroscopy suggests that the two ligated phosphines are trans to each other in these compounds. C-13 NMR spectroscopy indicates the but-2-yne ligand is donating four electrons to the metal in 1-17. The barrier to but-2-yne rotation of [W(CO)(PMe3)2(S2CNC4H8)(eta-2-MeC2Me)][BPh4] was calculated to be 66.9 +/- 1 kJ mol-1.
