POTENTIAL USE OF SYNTHETIC MOLECULAR BILAYER FILMS AS CHEMICAL SENSING MATERIALS - APPLICATION TO HUMIDITY SENSORS

Synthetic bilayers immobilized on electrodes were examined as a sensing material for humidity sensing. Transparent thin multi-bilayer film was fabricated on patterned gold electrodes on inter-digitated form. A remarkable change both in capacitance and in resistance accompanied the change in humidity, but it did not give a linear relationship between these a.c. parameters and the relative humidity. The sensor exhibited a low hysteresis (within 2% for the absorption-desorption cycle), and the reproducibility was quite good. On the other hand, the durability against water was insufficient.
