FLAME PROPAGATION ON THERMAL IGNITION

An optical study has been made of the thermal ignition of a mixture containing 16·7 per cent methane and 83·3 per cent oxygen in the temperature range 520° to 750°C and at a total pressure of 600 torr. Ignition was observed to commence in the gas phase at a point close to the centre of the cylindrical explosion vessel and was followed by spherical flame propagation. Burning velocities relative to the unburnt gas varied from 1 150 to 2 330 cm/sec over the temperature range studied. It is concluded that the large variation of burning velocity with temperature is consistent with trends observed for steady-state flames of methane and air. © 1969.
