ON MECHANISM OF STRESS-CORROSION CRACKING OF A TITANIUM-6 PERCENT ALUMINUM-4 PERCENT VANADIUM ALLOY IN ANHYDROUS METHANOL

Electron fractographic and high resolution electron diffraction studies of the fracture surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloy specimens, tensile tested at 1.7× 10-5 sec-1 in anhydrous methanol, respectively reveal a hard, second phase on the fracture surface and show it to be TiH2 associated with the presence of Ti3Al. The crystallographic relationships of α, β, Ti3Al and TiH2 were determined from the electron diffraction pattern, and they were in agreement with the expected relationships reported in the literature. The results support the conclusions made by Scully that stress-corrosion cracking in high-aluminum-containing titanium alloys is a form of hydrogen embrittlement. © 1969.
