Tissue cultures inoculated with mumps virus have been shown by cytological and fluorescent techniques to contain inclusion bodies which give an indication of the amount of infectious virus in the inoculum and of the sensitivity of the tissue culture to infection; inclusion body formation is inversely proportional to the susceptibility of the tissue culture to infection with the virus. It was found that inclusions developed at all times in the reproductive cycle, even when infectious virus was undetectable. This phenomenon was demonstrated in serial preparations by the simultaneous use of histochemical and fluorescent methods for the detection of inclusions. © 1968 Springer-Verlag.
