1. 1. Three exochitinases (A, B1, B2) and two chitobiases (-1, -2) were purified to homogeneity from the gastric juice of the lobster Homarus americanus. 2. 2. The amino acid compositions were obtained; all five enzymes are rich in Asx and Glx residues, and chitinase A, with chitobiase-2 are glycoproteins. 3. 3. The mol. wts of each of the three chitinases are ca 66,000; those of the chitobiases ca 116,000. 4. 4. The five enzymes all have pI's above 9.3. 5. 5. From inhibition studies both the chitobiases probably require carboxyllic acid and sulphydryl residues for activity. 6. 6. The results from the chitinases are less conclusive but suggest similar dependences. © 1990.
