Potential difference and d.c. resistance of the isolated frog skin were continuously recorded. Under irradiation with a dose-rate over 500 R/min and a dose over 1000 R the first reaction of the frog skin in well-oxygenated Ringer's is depolarization, which is followed by hyperpolarization. Under anoxic conditions only hyperpolarization can be found. The effect is highly dependent on the dose-rate, as is the case in most of the immediate reactions of organs and organisms to radiation hitherto observed.
