With the continuous decline in photovoltaic module prices, the design, cost and reliability of supplementary equipment such as d.c.-a.c. inverters become important. The d.c-a.c. inverter is still a costly and troublesome element in the photovoltaic system. This work is concerned with the design of a low cost, simple and efficient d.c.-a.c. inverter. Attention is paid to the suppression of lower order harmonics. In the design, the third harmonic and its odd multiples are entirely eliminated. The theoretical efficiency of the inverter exceeds 91%. All electronic components used in the circuit are common and of low cost. The inverter is designed as a bridge switched mode circuit to minimize the power loss. The three-level mode of operation satisfies the relative circuit simplicity, the rejection of the third harmonic (and its odd multiples) as well as high efficiency. The analysis of the design and the experimental construction of the inverter are discussed.
