ADDITIONAL CLARIFICATION OF THE MEDICAGO-BLANCHEANA-BONAROTIANA-ROTATA COMPLEX

This eastern Mediterranean complex consists of two annual species, between which there is substantial hybridization. Examination of type specimens showed that the two species are correctly named Medicago rotata Boiss. (a well-established usage) and Medicago bonarotiana Arcangeli (a name that has competed with Medicago blancheana Boiss.). The type of M. blancheana Boiss. is a hybrid of the two species, and the name has therefore been inappropriately used to designate the species that should be called M. bonarotiana. A key to the taxonomic components of the complex is provided.
