PREPARATION AND SURFACE-COMPOSITION OF TUNGSTEN CARBIDE POWDERS WITH HIGH SPECIFIC SURFACE-AREA

Unsupported tungsten carbide powders of beta-W2C and WC have been prepared with specific surface area of 100 and 30 m2 g-1, respectively. WC surfaces are equilibrated with a stoichiometric carbide, lack carbon-carbon bonded surface residues, and contain less than 10% of a monolayer of residual oxygen. Beta-W2C and WC surfaces chemisorbed CO and H irreversibly with an uptake of 20 and 40% of a monolayer, respectively. Carbide sites chemisorb oxygen and NH3 strongly: about half of the oxygen desorbed in a TPR as CO at 1150 K and NH3 desorbed in a TPD as N2 at 800 and 1200 K.
