For the futuristic generating devices covered in this review, the first priority will be to produce useful amounts of energy by alternative means to those currently in use. This will be followed immediately by efforts to ensure the reliability of such new methods. It is not expected that the next decade will see any real breakthrough in materials, but rather a continuation of the progress towards better materials utilization. Even superconducting devices will use many present-day materials and will be designed to well-known basic concepts.
