Room-temperature measurements of the residual planar magnetic anisotropy were performed on amorphous Fe40N&0B20r ibbons obtained by planar flow-casting with four different peripheral velocities of the rotating drum. The ribbons were examined in the as-cast condition and after annealing at different temperatures. The intensity of the uniaxial anisotropy grows with increasing quenching rate, and is generally reduced by annealing. The present results are in agreement with a magneto-elastic model for the in-plane magnetic anisotropy, relating the observed effect to residual anisotropic properties of the amorphous matrix. © 1990 IOP Publishing Ltd.
