HIGHER ORDER ASYMPTOTIC TERMS OF 2-DIMENSIONAL DIFFRACTION BY A SMALL APERTURE

A modified diffraction coefficient, suitable for the computation of higher order edge-edge interaction terms in the two-dimensional diffraction by a narrow slit and a circular aperture, is derived. The resulting improvement in the accuracy of the transmission cross section over the usual asymptotic expressions is established. By comparison with the exact solutions for these cases, it is shown that the coefficient may be used with confidence for such apertures when Ka ≥1, where K is the wave-number and a is half the characteristic dimension of the aperture. © Copyright 1968 by the American Geophysical Union.
