MEASUREMENTS OF SOLID-WATER CONTACT ANGLES IN THE PRESENCE OF DIFFERENT VAPORS

摘要
The Wilhelmy technique using a platinum plate is suitable for measuring the interfacial tension between water and vapour at thermodynamic equilibrium. It is also possible to detect the effects of different additional vapour components. The Wilhelmy method has been applied to several polymers and experimental data are presented for the influence of various vapour mixtures on the water contact angles and their hysteresis. Experimental results reveal the adsorption of octane and chlorobenzene on different polymers as a function of temperature. In the light of these findings, consequences are discussed for the usual model calculations of the interfacial tension between solids and vapours from wetting experiments.
