HEMOGLOBINS IN SMOLTIFYING CHINOOK SALMON, ONCORHYNCHUS-TSHAWYTSCHA, SUBJECTED TO PHOTOPERIOD CONTROL

摘要
The ontogeny of hemoglobins is not correlated with smoltification in stream- and ocean-type juveniles of the chinook salmon, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha. The transition from juvenile to adult hemoglobins begins after completion of smoltification, and is not induced by photoperiod control in synchrony with the smoltification. Since the shift is a continuous process proceeding far into the ocean life, it probably has no adaptive value for the conversion from freshwater to seawater life.
