AN NMR INVESTIGATION OF SOME AMORPHOUS POLYSACCHARIDES

Proton spin-lattice relaxation times in the rotating and laboratory frames of five polysaccharides have been measured as a function of temperature and frequency. The proton second moment of glycogen has also been measured as a function of temperature. The results have been interpreted in terms of a model in which molecular motions are characterized by a log-normal distribution of correlation times. The T1-rho results reveal a reorientation of CH2OH groups. In the case of chitin, evidence of threefold reorientations of methyl groups has been found.
