Virus inclusions (X-bodies and spindles) in the cytoplasm and crystals of reserve protein in the chloroplasts of Phajus grandifolius were investigated with the electron microscope. The X-bodies are composed of filamentous virus particles, which aggregate linearly and finally compose the spindle. The protein crystal in the chloroplast consists of globular particles with a diameter of approximately 60 Å. They are arranged in a lattice with 100 Å meshes and form crystal platelets of 400-1,700 Å thickness. Stroma is always found between the platelets. © 1969 Springer-Verlag.
