New and old results of Jastrow calculations of the Λ binding energy in nuclear matter based on the effective central two-body {Mathematical expression} potentials of Herndon and Tang are collected and discussed. Arguments in favor of the reliability of the Jastrow evaluation are presented. The possibility of erasing the large discrepancy between the calculated results and the accepted empirical value for B Λ by the incorporation of a three-body {Mathematical expression} potential, or by the use of a two-body {Mathematical expression} potential with tensor component, is considered, and some tentative numerical work along these lines described. © 1969 Società Italiana di Fisica.
