SIGNAL SATURATION EFFECT AND ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES IN PHOTOACOUSTIC-SPECTROSCOPY OF SOLIDS

Signal saturation effect poses a serious problem for photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) of solids if an excessive amount of material is employed. It is possible to minimize this undesirable effect by using an optimum sample size and proper sample preparation techniques. Several methods are developed and successfully applied to the characterization of many strong absorbers including tetraphenylporphine, cobalt tetraphenylporphine, and rose bengal at a microgram quantity. If a material participates predominantly in a nonradiative type of decay, the optical absorption spectrum obtained by PAS is strikingly similar to the one recorded by the conventional transmission spectroscopy. © 1979, American Chemical Society.
