ICE NUCLEATION IN EMULSIFIED AQUEOUS SALT-SOLUTIONS - A DIFFERENTIAL SCANNING CALORIMETRY STUDY

Low temperature differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) studies on emulsified water and aqueous salt solutions indicate that the homogeneous nucleation temperature of water is reduced by the addition of salts, the reduction being greater for solutions containing ions of higher charge densities. Isothermal freezing studies conducted on emulsified water at temperatures above the homogeneous nucleation temperature show a rapid heterogeneous nucleation of water to ice. This rapid nucleation is slowed down by the addition of salts and is slower for solutions with salts of higher solubilities and for solutions containing ions of higher charge densities.
