PHOTOOXIDATION OF NAPHTHALENAMINES ADSORBED ON PARTICLES UNDER SIMULATED ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS

The photooxidation of 1- and 2-naphthalenamines (1-NA and 2-NA) adsorbed on particles was examined under simulated atmospheric conditions. Two reactors, a fluidized-bed and a fixed-bed ''merry-go-round'', were used. Adsorbents, coverages of each naphthalenamine on the adsorbents, and light sources were varied. The photooxidation of 1-NA afforded 1,4-naphthoquinone and 2-(1'-naphthylamino)-1,4-naphthoquinone, while the photooxidation of 2-NA gave 2-amino-4-(2'-naphthylimino)-1,4-naphthoquinone and dibenzo[a,h]phenazine. The reaction mechanisms were examined. The relative reactivities of NAs were alumina, silica > TiO2 > coal fly ash > Fe2O3. Photolytic half-lives (t1/2) on silica and alumina decreased with decreasing amounts of NAs adsorbed. Sunlight irradiation enhanced the photooxidation rates from 2 (Al2O3) to 5 (SiO2) times those under UV light irradiation.
