The effect of sodium chloride, calcium chloride and zinc chloride at concentrations of 5 to 30% by weight on the liquid-liquid equilibria (LLE) of the ternary system ethyl acetate (S)-2-propanol (C)-water (A) and the vapor-liquid equilibria (VLE) of its constituent binary systems, i.e., ethyl acetate-2-propanol, 2-propanol-water and ethyl acetate-water has been experimentally investigated. The effect of the above salts on the heat of mixing (HOM) of the two constituent miscible binaries, i.e., ethyl acetate-2-propanol and 2-propanol-water has also been experimentally ascertained. While the measurement of LLE and HOM was done at 30 +/- 1-degrees-C following established experimental procedure, the VLE were determined at atmospheric pressure, 101.3 +/- 0.4 kPa, using a Smith and Bonner type of equilibrium still. The experimentation on HOM was carried out using a standard type calorimeter attached to a microprocessor based control unit MIPROC which was designed in our laboratory. The experimental tie-line data of the LLE have been correlated using the Eisen-Joffe equation. The binary VLE data have been correlated by Wilson and NRTL models after checking their thermodynamic consistency. The experimental HOM data have been fitted into the Scatchard model.
