The geomagnetic field F is distorted by at least three subsidiary fields Fb, Fr, and Fs. The first is produced by the electric currents that flow over the boundary of the magnetosphere, the second by the currents that flow in the trapping region, the third by a sheet current in the tail. Extending previous model calculations for F+Fb+Fr by Williams & Mead, we compute the field lines in the midnight meridian plane for the four fields combined: this is done for different intensities of a symmetrical ring current, fixed in form and location, and for different distances of the edge of the sheet current from the Earth'scentre. The field lines in the trapping region are separated from those in the tail by a transitional line that has a neutral point on the edge of the sheet current; the latitude at which this meets the ionosphere, for different intensities of geomagnetic disturbance, is discussed in connection with the equatorward expansion of the auroral oval.
