HIGH-SPIN SPECTROSCOPY OF I-119, I-121 - PROLATE AND OBLATE SHAPE COEXISTENCE

High-spin states in the odd-proton I-119, I-121 isotopes have been studied following heavy-ion fusion-evaporation reactions using boron and carbon beams. Both prolate (gamma = 0-degrees) and oblate (gamma = -60-degrees) collective bands have been observed built on low-lying positive- and negative-parity proton states, namely, h11/2, g9/2, g7/2, and d5/2 orbitals. At the highest spins (approximately 39/2) the collective behavior of the h11/2 yrast band is seen to break down when noncollective oblate states become yrast, resulting in the observation of band termination. The terminating state involves the pi-h11/2x[pi-g7/2]2x[nu-h11/2]2 configuration at gamma = +60-degrees.
