A comparison of changes at denervated and paralyzed soleus and extensor digitorum longus (EDL) neuromuscular junctions of young mice was made by EM. Secondary synaptic folds density had failed equally in the paralyzed and denervated muscles, by day 5 in the soleus and day 10 in the EDL. Maintenance of secondary synaptic folds requires muscle activity. The rapid breakdown of endplates especially in soleus may help to explain the greater terminal sprouting after paralysis in mice compared with rats.
