TRIFLUOROMETHYLMINIOSULFUR DIFLUORIDE - INFRARED SPECTRUM STRUCTURE AND A NEW SYNTHESIS

N-Trifluoromethyliminosulfur difluoride is shown to be the material produced in 96% yield by the interaction at 155°C of sulfur tetrafluoride with cyanuric fluoride in the presence of excess cesium fluoride. Other isomers such as SF5CN and CF3SNF2 are not formed in detectable amounts. In the absence of CsF none of the iminosulfur difluoride can be detected, and if cesium fluoride is present in only trace amounts similar results are obtained during the same reaction time. The reaction of CsSF5 with (FCN)3 at 155°C also yields CF3NSF2. The iminosulfur compound can be considered to be a derivative of thionyl fluoride and the infrared spectrum is analysed with reference to OSF2. The gas phase spectrum, covering the range 3000-33 cm-1, is interpreted in terms of the C3 point group and seventeen of the eighteen fundamentals are assigned. Only the torsional mode, for which no evidence was found, remains unknown. © 1969.
