INTEGRATED OPTICAL RECEIVERS USING MSM DETECTORS

Advantages attributed to the MSM detector include its low capacitance, high-speed and compatibility with FET IC processes. This has resulted in many demonstrations of OEIC receivers, both in GaAS and InP. This paper discusses how the MSM detector fares when combined with preamplifier electronics and points out how certain advantages due to its horizontal structure can result in receivers with fundamentally higher performance than possible with vertical p-i-n detector designs.
