ADSOLUBILIZATION OF ALCOHOLS IN SURFACTANT BILAYERS FORMED ON ALUMINA

Adsolubilization of hexanol and heptafluorobutanol into the LiDS (lithium dodecyl sulfate) bilayer and the LiFOS (lithium perfluorooctanesulfonate) bilayer formed on α-alumina was studied. The adsolubilized amounts of the alcohols increased with concentration of alcohols, and the partition coefficients of the alcohols were greater for hexanol than for heptafluorobutanol. Measurements of the ratio I1/I3 of pyrene indicate that incorporation of hexanol into the LiDS and LiFOS bilayers and of heptafluorobutanol into the LiDS bilayer renders the polarity of the bilayer much lower, whereas incorporation of heptafluorobutanol into the LiFOS bilayer slightly alters the polarity of the bilayer. © 1990, American Chemical Society.
