BIOLOGY OF HYOSTRONGYLUS RUBIDUS .I. PRIMARY INFECTION IN YOUNG PIGS

Thirteen young pigs from a minimal disease herd were infected with 4,000 larvae of Hyostrongylus rubidus and killed at intervals. The stomachs were examined for evidence of pathological changes. Worms were recovered and examined to determine the stages of their development. Pathological changes in the stomach are mainly referable to the mechanical presence of the worms. Gastric nodules were seen but their precise significance was not clear. In experimental infections both larvae and adults are associated with changes which could lead to the clinical condition reported from the field. © 1968.
