摘要
Medium chain fatty acids act as antibacterial agents at low pH values. When used in the presence of sugar, they should selectively inhibit areas of the dental plaque containing a large proportion of acidogenic organisms, and the ability of potassium nonanoate (CH3 (CH2)7 COOH) to reduce fissure caries was studied using male Wistar rats. Animals were weaned at 3 weeks, fed a standard laboratory diet for 1 week and then provided with a cariogenic, sucroserich diet. The inclusion of 1 per cent or 5 per cent powdered nonanoate in the diet gave large and significant reductions in total and advanced lesions after 28 and 39 days. When a 0.5 per cent solution of nonanoate was given in the sucrose-containing drinking water there was a significant reduction in advanced lesions during the first 28 days. Nonanoate appears to be a safe and effective anticaries agent in a solid and soluble form. © 1979.
